Always nice to see new people getting into Touhou.
Yeah, Memories of Phantasm takes quite a few liberties with it's story, some are good, others not so much. It's still amazing for what it is, and it introduced a lot of people to Touhou. To think that the first episode came out over 10 years ago and there are still episodes being made to this day really shows how passionate the team behind it is.
I'll take this opportunity to shout out the other 2 major Touhou fan anime projects that I know of:
- Touhou Musou Kakyou ~ A Summer Day's Dream: This one is a passion project made mostly by one dude as far as I know, but it does have professional voice acting with some pretty big names (just check it's MAL page). It's a self-contained story, so prior knowledge isn't needed to watch it. It has 4 episodes so far, the first one came out in 2008 and looks pretty rough, but the animation got progressively better with each episode, the most recent episode was released this year and looks absolutely stunning.
- Touhou Hifuu Katsudou Kiroku ~ The Sealed Esoteric History: This one is probably my favorite one of the 3, it has 3 episodes so far [Moon, Wish, and Fate (Part 1)]. This one requires some prior knowledge, since it references events from the manga series and the two main characters (Maribel and Renko) are from the short stories ZUN includes with his CDs. It also has professional voice acting with some pretty big names (again, just check it's MAL page), great animation all around, but it does get progressively better with each episode. It's very episodic, with each episode trying to explore things that aren't very well defined in the lore. The first episode talks about the lunar war and how Kaguya ended up in Gensoukyou; the second one talks about Sanae's life before moving into Gensoukyou and the third one talks about the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew before moving into Gensoukyou (at least that's what it seems to me, still waiting for part 2). The third episode also touches on Maribel's connection to Yukari, which has been a topic of debate in the community since forever.

I was only able to find episode 3 with English subs in 360p, though. I remember watching the full episode in 720p in Japanese during the official Touhou Station stream, but none of the high quality versions seem to have English subs...

The opening and ending of this one and the following episodes are sung by senya, aka Mayumi Morinaga as part of the doujin circle Yuuhei Satellite (which is responsible for the animated you've seen of Yuyuko and Sanae).
Outside of Yuuhei Satellite, she's also done some video game soundtrack and a few anime EDs, most known one would be Fairy Tail's ending 11.

When Reimu became the shrine maiden a ritual was performed that turned 20 years of her lifespan into pure magic power.
Another result of this ritual is she will remain young until the day she dies.

@ExoticBankai Reaction Also it is implied within one of the manga that Yukari is interfering with Her boundary of life-and-death so she doesn't whenever she Has an accident. In the manga: [the wild and horned hermit] she ate spoiled food and was supposed to die but another soul took her place in the afterlife.

@Azurill Sun In the wild and hermit the reaper was waiting for a soul show up for her to ferry across the river of sticks, but the soul that showed up was not the 1 that she was waiting for in fact the soul wasn't even supposed to die yet. The next scene that showed up was of reimu in bed having suffered from eating something spoiled knowing full well it was but being too pore to get any fresh food... she was out of options.

There's an interesting story about the production of this series. Basically, the producer and the writer are constantly debating whether to make it like a Shonen anime or whether to make it some sort of shipping/fan service comedy series.
The writer on the side of Shonen and the Producer on the side of thr fan service comedy
(Which I guess is understandable from a production stand point as it's way harder to animate action than people mostly just sitting around. )
This actually resulted in the script for this episode being written in about 3 days.
Which is probably why its so fast and why the first half is so Shonen like, because the writer did it and the producer didn't have time to fight them on it. Presumably they added the end to satisfy the producer.
Seemingly shipping Sakuya and Remilia, (which is both an uncomfortably popular ship and the result of a meme about Sakuya either secretly being a lolicon or being uncomfortably obsessed with how cute she is)
As well as Marisa and tsundere Reimu..
Oh, and that after credits scene at the very end looks like them blaming the events of touhou 10 on Yukari, which is a popular fan theory.
Anyway, the mixed direction results in understandably divided opinions about the whole thing. But everyone can agree that it's absolutely insane that an anime like this got made entirely by fans.
That's really interesting, i would really enjoy a full slice of life anime of touhou, after all the character interaction are really fun !
The next two episodes will be on Touhou 6 so the decision to wait or no is yours. After that it will cover various games in a random order and there's one or two fillers, we'll cover the details in comments.
On the ending scene, this is a liberal interpretation of Yukari's love for pulling strings in the shadows. She does not show herself beyond old acquaintances, and conversely, knowing Yukari personally is a sign that you're not ordinary either. A little known fact (from SSiB and CiLR) however, is that Yuyuko and Yukari don't really like each other's servants. As in Yuyuko does not like Ran and Yukari disregards Youmu. It's nothing too serious but it does cause minor troubles : eg Yukari schemes expecting Yuyuko to understand her, but neither will explain anything to their respective servants even though they're the ones who actually have to move.
Green haired girl is Sanae. Reimu's shrine-maiden business rival introduced in Touhou 10 MoF.
